G-Grandpa Layton

My Great-grandfather Layton was born in Glenmary, Tennessee (Scott County) 1858 - 1935.  He was married to Alpine or Arlena Peak. Back then their names changed as the wind blew. Or careless census workers is more like it?

From what I can find out about Layton, he grew up on a farm. His father and uncles served in the Civil War on the side of the Union. Much of Scott County did. They were so against the State of Tennessee succeeding from the US - they succeeded from Tennessee and formed their own Free State. I did not find any military records so I am guessing he did not serve. The censuses state he was a farmer, and owned his own land free and clear. The 1920 census has him listed as working as a Laborer for the railroad.

He, his wife, and their five children lived on Brimstone Rd, where many of my ancestors, including my dad, lived. Apparently, it was a huge land purchase by a member of the family a few years after the Civil War. Throughout the years, parcels were then passed down through the generations.

Wouldn't it be cool if families still did that? Quite possibly, we wouldn't have the homeless that we do now.

Since the 1970's this area has been deteriorating and depressed. Once a coal mining community as well as lumbering, being the main employment for these mountain people.  As one family moves away or dies, developers buy the homes for the property and slowly edge out the hardworking people. Now it is a huge recreation area.

In July 1881, Layton became the Postmaster in Glenmary Tennessee. He was the 2nd one.
